ExGen 500骨架上每3个原子中就有1个氮原子(可结合质子的氨基基团)。因此该多聚物在内涵体内部起到非常有效的“质子海绵”作用(1, 4)，从而保护内在化的DNA免受核酸酶降解。
ExGen 500体内转染试剂可转染任何大小的DNA分子。
