已成熟的卵巢卵泡不进行排卵，而是充斥着大量的卵泡液进行过大地生长，同时颗粒膜消失，卵泡内膜直接接触卵泡腔，最后卵也就退化了。这种状态的卵泡，称为囊肿样卵泡。出现囊肿样卵泡的原因，认为是卵泡成熟激素对卵巢发生作用的结果，此时发情激素的分泌是旺盛的。
