小鼠AN21，大鼠NG2和人MCSP蛋白是同源物。NG2是一种硫酸软骨素糖蛋白，由发育中和成年中枢神经系统（CNS）中的胶质祖细胞和未成熟的Schwann细胞表达。NG2/AN2+胶质细胞已被确定为哺乳动物中枢神经系统中的第四种主要胶质细胞类型，有别于其他细胞类型。NG2/AN2+细胞是少突胶质细胞和灰质中一些原生质星形胶质细胞的前体。在细胞经历终末分化之前，NG2/AN2表达下调。然而，在生成少突胶质细胞后，白质和灰质中仍存在NG2/AN2+细胞群。NG2/AN2+神经胶质细胞通过接收来自神经元的突触前输入并响应突触释放的神经递质参与神经元-神经胶质回路。
