文献和实验毒蛇的特殊唾腺（毒腺）所分泌的毒素。蛇毒具有各种类型，其中包括类似胰蛋白酶的蛋白酶，是毒素作用的主要物质。蛋白质的分解作用，使血管壁障碍，导致血压下降。各种蛇毒所引起的生理障碍是：（1 ）神经性毒素：这是以眼镜蛇等为主的蛇毒，其所引起的生理障碍在于作用呼吸中枢，而导致呼吸麻痹。有的把它分为箭毒样作用（眼镜蛇毒）和神经毒作用（响尾蛇毒）。（ 2 ）出血性毒素：作用于小血管和毛细血管的管壁而使之出血，这也就是构成被咬部位出现出血性肿的原因（蝮蛇科的蛇毒）。（ 3 ）溶血性毒素：在卵磷脂存在
由蜜蜂的毒腺分泌出来的毒素。具有神经毒性、溶血、凝固或出血的作用，但民间很早就用来治疗神经痛、风湿症。此毒素被认为含有许多毒性物质，已分离出磷脂酶A、脱氢酶抑制因子、具有-SH或-S-S-基的多肽及其他物质，并已分别证明了其他的毒性。
