PCR and/or ELISA plate sealing
The Axygen PCR-TS ("thermoseal") and PCR-SP ("seal plate") sealing films are thin, transparent polypropylene (TS) and polyester (SP) films designed for sealing microplates. The TS variant is designed for PCR applications, and the SP variant for ELISA. Both are rated for -40 to +120 Celsius (the TS actually up to +125). Both are clear, so should be suitable for sealing plates prior to reading in colorimetric ELISA reactions and similar optical-absorbance type assays.
These are very cheap alternatives to other sealing solutions such as permanent, washable mats, disposable foils, or the ubiquitous MJ Research Microseal series of sealing films. However, the Axygen sealing films do not form a tight seal (even with Axygen plates) and result in significant edge-evaporation during thermocycling. For ambient temperature applications such as an ELISA they may be fine. VWR retails the SP variant as a direct replacement for the TS version, which makes me question whether there is any real performance difference between the two, even though they are made of different materials and are retailed with different stated applications.
Axygen's sealing mats and foil may perform better, but I cannot seriously recommend the PCR-TS and PCR-SP films for PCR thermocycling. They are fine (and cheap) for temporarily covering plates during setup, or for short-term storage of pre-PCR samples or post-PCR reactions in the fridge. However, for long-term storage they are also not suitable, as evaporation is significant. Use with caution.
