Background:

Human SHBG (Sex hormone-binding globulin), also known as ABP (Testis-specific Androgen-binding protein) or TeBG (Testosterone-estradiol-binding globulin), is a variably glycosylated, secreted non-disulfide linked homodimer that belongs to the SHBG family. Functions as an androgen transport protein, but may also be involved in receptor mediated processes. Each dimer binds one molecule of steroid. Specific for 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone, testosterone, and 17-beta-estradiol. Regulates the plasma metabolic clearance rate of steroid hormones by controlling their plasma concentration. Low SHGB levels are associated with increased risk for type 2 diabetes for both man and women.
