指对因某基因产生变异而引起异常的细胞，人为地引入具有正常机能的基因，恢复其表现形质而言。例如使在胸腺嘧啶脱氧核苷激酶基因缺陷（ tK- ）的小白鼠 L细胞，吸收疱疹病毒分离出的胸苷激酶基因与磷酸钙凝胶的混合物，表现形质转换成 tK＋ ，此时一般认为引入的基因是在细胞中加合起来的，而不是用正常基因靠遗传的重组来代换有缺陷的基因。
