指鸟类等动物的发生初期，包围于胚盘层下胚下腔周围的胚区，位于其上方的是胚盘层的周边部即暗区。胚壁来源于多核体周缘质内壁，具多量的卵黄球。其本身虽不分化为独立的细胞，但至少对其前身的周缘来说，可以多核体的核为中心形成独立的细胞附加于胚盘层。
