通常是指按食欲大小来划分蚕龄的时期。最初为寡食期 （spare eating stage），其中包括是至竖毛的一龄期和一龄，其以上到蚕皮失去皱褶为止的这一时期。其次是中食期（moderately eating st－age），表现为皮肤紧张且带有光泽，食欲增大，是体长增加的时期。接着是多食期（vosaciouts stsg－e），也称贪食期，此期幼蚕皮肤产生光泽，壮蚕（4—5龄期）则蚕体色发白而肥大，是食欲最旺盛的时期。
