例如昆虫幼虫在脱皮的同时，其形态也多少发生一些变化，但由于种类的不同，有的经过蛹的过程形态上进行剧烈的变化而变为成虫。这种从胚期以后开始直到成体期所产生的明显变化称为胚后发育。另外在幼虫期并不表现明显的变化，但在变态时却进行剧烈的变化（例如海胆、海星），此称为幼虫后发育（ post larval development）。
