文献和实验一类胆汁酸。与通常的 C24 胆汁酸具有相同母核构造，但侧链具有与固醇同样碳架的类固醇羧酸。在某种两栖类、爬行类等的胆汁中，高级胆汁酸作为其主要成分，以游离状态或与牛璜酸成结合的形态而存在。认为它是进化为 C24 胆汁酸的前体物质，并由胆固醇生物合成。当投予哺乳类时，就会代谢成为 C2 胆汁酸。所以，可以它为胆固醇生成 C24 胆汁酸途径中的中间物质。
