IDI1 is a peroxisomally localized enzyme that catalyzes the interconversion of isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP) to its highly electrophilic isomer, dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP). These are substrates for the reactions that ultimately result in the synthesis of cholesterol. There is reduction in IPP isomerase activity in peroxisomal deficiency diseases such as Zellweger syndrome and neonatal adrenoleukodystrophy.

Catalyzes the 1,3-allylic rearrangement of the homoallylic substrate isopentenyl (IPP) to its highly electrophilic allylic isomer, dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP).

所谓活性异戊二烯单位的△ 3 -异戊烯醇焦磷酸与其异构体二甲基丙烯焦磷酸缩合之后开始牻牛儿基焦磷酸的反应，其后通过以同样的方式进行 C5 单位的缩合，生成碳数为 5n的异戊烯焦磷酸。通过这些异戊烯焦磷酸的链长以及氧化、还原、脱羧等反应可生物合成多种类的类异戊二烯。
胆甾醇的生物合成 biosynthesis of chole-sterol
在生物体内胆甾醇从乙酰辅酶 A生物合成。三分子乙酰 CoA（ C2 ）缩合，经由乙酰乙酰 CoA（ C4 ）而成为 3-羟基 -3-甲基戊二酰辅酶 A，它的硫酯基被还原而生成甲羟戊酸（ C6 ）。由于甲羟戊酸的磷酸化和随后发生的脱羧和脱水而生成异戊烯焦磷酸（ C5 ）和二甲基丙烯焦磷酸（ C5 ）。后二者，顺次结合而生成牻牛儿醇焦磷酸（ C10 ）。继而变成法尼焦磷酸（ C15 ），二分子法尼焦磷酸结合而成〔角〕鲨烯（ squalene）（ C30 ），〔角
戊烯醇焦磷酸，实际上是活性异戊二烯的前体，此物质与由异构酶作用生成的二甲基丙烯焦磷酸连续地缩合，进一步通过形成环或氧化还原反应等，生物合成出各种异戊二烯化合物。
