Biotium公司的GelRed 和 GelGreen 无论用于预制凝胶染色还是凝胶电泳后染色，都表现出了极高的灵敏度。为配合 312 nm UV 凝胶成像系统而设计的 GelRed ，在使用了我们新开发的具有专利的试验步骤后（该试验步骤中使用稀释的 NaCl 溶液替代传统的 TBE 缓冲溶液），在凝胶电泳后染色中优于或者至少相当于 SYBR Gold 。但与 SYBR Gold 不同， GelRed 在预制凝胶中使用时仍然有极高的灵敏度，事实上GelRed 在检测低浓度、微量 DNA 方面比 EB 表现出更高的灵敏度，尤其对小分子量的 DNA 检测非常灵敏（图1）。 GelGreen 可以满足使用 488 nm 激光凝胶扫描仪或者可见光激发的 Dark Reader 的研究人员的使用要求。 GelGreen 无论是在预制凝胶还是凝胶电泳后染色中都与 SYBR Green I 灵敏度相当，但不存在后者的不稳定性问题。实际上， GelRed 和 GelGreen ，特别是 GelRed 非常稳定，可以长期在室温下保存。当这两种染料稀释在 TBE 或者类似的电泳缓冲溶液中时甚至可以使用微波炉加热，便于采用常规方法制备预制凝胶。含有染料的预制凝胶可以成批制备，长期保存。

GelGreenTM is a sensitive, stable and enviornmentally safe green fluorescent nucleic acid dye designed to stain either dsDNA, ssDNA or RNA in agarose gels. GelGreen is far more sensitive than SYBR Safe (Figure 1). Unlike SYBR dyes, which are known to be unstable, GelGreen is very stable, both hydrolytically and thermally. GelGreen has a UV absorption between 250 nm and 300 nm and a strong absorption peak centered around 500 nm (Figure 2). Thus, GelGreen is compatible with either a 254 nm UV transilluminator or a gel reader equipped with visible light excitation (such as a 488 nm laser-based gel scanner or a Dark Reader). GelGreen can be used for either post gel staining or precast gel staining. A series of safety tests have confirmed that GelGreenTM is noncytotoxic, nonmutagenic and nonhazardous at concentrations well above the working concentrations used in gel staining. As a result, GelGreen can be safely disposed of down the drain or in regular trash, providing convenience and reducing cost in waste disposal.
