扁豆凝集素由两个17kDa和两个8kDa的亚基组成。LCA可识别含有α-甘露糖残基的序列，同时也可识别作为受体结构一部分的糖类。研究发现LCA在模式系统中可有效阻止皮肤同种异体移植排斥反应。另外，LCA也被用于纯化多种糖蛋白，如免疫球蛋白、组织相容性抗原和α2-巨球蛋白。
