Background:
Syphilis remains a prominent sexually transmitted infection worldwide. It is caused by the bacterial spirochete Treponema pallidum, which is an obligate human pathogen. TP17 (also known as TP0435) has some sequence homology (20% identity) to NlpE. In E. coli, this latter protein is anchored to the outer membrane and can activate the Cpx cell envelope stress response pathway. In T. pallidum, however, it is likely that TP17 does not have this function, inasmuch as the genome of this organism apparently does not encode other members of the Cpx pathway; also, TP17 is likely localized to the periplasm.
