Interferon alpha-2 (IFNα2) is a type I interferon encoded by the IFNA2 gene located on chromosome 9. It is a cytokine produced primarily by virus-infected cells and plays a pivotal role in the innate immune response. Upon secretion, IFNα2 binds to the ubiquitously expressed type I interferon receptor complex (IFNAR1 and IFNAR2), initiating the JAK-STAT signaling pathway. This activation leads to the transcription of numerous interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) that confer antiviral, antiproliferative, and immunomodulatory effects. Clinically, recombinant forms of IFNα2, such as IFNα2a and IFNα2b, have been utilized in the treatment of various viral infections, including hepatitis B and C, as well as certain cancers like melanoma and hematological malignancies. However, their use is often limited by side effects and the development of more targeted therapies. Research continues into optimizing IFNα2-based treatments and understanding its role in immune regulation and disease pathogenesis.
