CD11c is a cell surface protein that belongs to the integrin family and is primarily expressed on dendritic cells, macrophages, and certain granulocytes. It is part of the CD11/CD18 integrin complex, also known as integrin αXβ2, and plays a crucial role in immune cell adhesion, migration, and activation. CD11c is involved in the immune response by facilitating the interaction of immune cells with other cells or components of the extracellular matrix. As a marker of dendritic cells, CD11c is commonly used to identify these antigen-presenting cells in immunology research. Dendritic cells are essential for initiating adaptive immune responses by processing and presenting antigens to T cells. CD11c also plays a role in phagocytosis, cytokine production, and immune cell signaling, which are key for regulating immune responses, especially in inflammation and infection.
