K-Ras (Kirsten rat sarcoma virus oncogene homolog) is a member of the Ras family of small GTPases, which play a key role in cell signaling. It functions as a molecular switch, cycling between an active GTP-bound state and an inactive GDP-bound state, regulating a variety of cellular processes, including growth, differentiation, and survival. K-Ras is frequently involved in signaling pathways such as the MAPK/ERK and PI3K/Akt pathways, which control cell proliferation and survival. Mutations in the K-Ras gene are commonly found in many types of cancer, including lung, colorectal, and pancreatic cancers, where they lead to the constitutive activation of K-Ras and uncontrolled cell growth. K-Ras is a critical target for cancer research, although developing therapies to inhibit its mutated forms has proven challenging.
