Cryopreservation can help minimize waste and thereby increase the efficiency with which transgenic mouse colonies can be used (1 ,2 ). The main applications for cryopreservation are firstly the longterm storage of transgenic mouse lines and secondly the shortterm storage of embryos when these cannot be used fresh owing to a shortage of cells, recipients, or DNA for microinjection.
