Vitamin E is comprised of two homologous series of tocochromanols, termed “tocopherols” and “tocotrienols.” They are structurally related, having a common chromanol ring, but distinguished by their side chains. Tocopherols have a saturated phytyl tail, whereas the tocotrienols possess an unsaturated isoprenoid side chain. Four homologs of each type, characterized by their Greek prefixes (α, β, γ, δ ), are known to exist in nature (1 ).
