说明生长素作用机制的假说之一。根据这种假说，即作为具有生长素活性的化学结构必需具备两个条件：一个是能与其他基因结合的不饱和环；二是具有能与其他基因结合的羧基的侧链，具备这样两种作用的基因正如图A 那样，与其它物质（例如蛋白质的氨基和半胱氨酸酰基）连接的物质就是生长素，这里环（ B）、侧链（ C）、或其立体结构（ D），无论缺哪一个条件都说明其所相当的抗生长素。用高浓度生长素所抑制的生长，则成为图 E的状态，这是因为不能进行二点连接。
