具有许多色素细胞的组织。多存在于表皮，一部分也达至真皮。后者系表皮基底层色素细胞再次移动的结果。蜕皮的动物，表皮中的色素组织与表皮一起脱掉，而引起体色变化。即使是同样的色素，例如黑色素，根据其色素细胞的存在位置，外观上皮肤的色调也不相同，在表皮中呈褐色者，而在真皮内则看起来象紫色或蓝色。
