这种运输不仅仅是物质进出细胞,而是从细胞的一侧进入,从另一侧出去,实际上是穿越细胞的运输。在多细胞生物中,整个细胞层作为半渗透性的障碍，而不仅仅是细胞质膜。如植物的根部细胞负责吸收水份和矿物盐, 然后将它们运输到其他组织即是这种运输。
