指开口于表皮的腺体而言。脊椎动物中鱼类、两栖类、哺乳类相当发达，爬行类、鸟类缺乏。鱼类有单细胞性和多细胞性粘液腺，分泌粘液。一部分有与鳍棘有关的毒腺，深海鱼的发光腺有的也属于皮肤腺。两栖类以上的皮肤腺为多细胞腺，而两栖类有粘液腺和颗粒腺，前者较小，分布于全体表，后者也称毒腺，形大，位于局部。爬行类蜥蜴的后肢有称股孔的腺状结构，在鸟类有尾脂腺。哺乳类除汗腺、大汗腺、皮脂腺外，有汗腺变形物的乳腺，尤其是雌性相当发达。无脊椎动物也有脱皮腺和其它种种皮肤腺。
