带正电荷的罗丹明染料（比如罗丹明酯）选择性定位在线粒体，因此，普遍用来标记活细胞线粒体。除了选择性标记线粒体外，与JC-1一样，四甲基罗丹明甲酯（Tetramethylrhodamine Methyl Ester,TMRM）广泛用来测定线粒体膜电位。TMRM在细胞膜不会形成聚集物，与膜蛋白的相互作用非常小。因此，该染料的跨膜分布与膜电位直接相关。TMRM的光谱特性类似于TRITC，使用起来相当方便。
