文献和实验开口于昆虫口器上颚基部的分泌腺，由分泌组织和贮藏囊组成。是蚂蚁信息激素的分泌器官，鉴定柠檬醛（citral），香茅醛（citronellal），橙花醇（nerol）等经鉴定为其外激素。蜜蜂从上颚腺分泌2－庚酮（2－heptanone）。也起信息激素的作用。蜜蜂的蜂王可由其上颚腺分泌蜂王物质。
开口于蜜蜂工蜂腹部第六节背面的分泌器官。由很多的分泌细胞组成，分泌物贮存于袋状的凹陷处。这种分泌物对工蜂有很强的引诱性，作为蜜蜂跟踪外激素而起作用。分泌物含有香叶醇（geraniol），橙花酸（ nerolic， acid），香叶酸（ geranic acid），柠檬醛（ citral）。这些混合作为标记外激素而起作用。
系蚁、白蚁、蜜蜂等社会性昆虫的巢被侵犯时，其群体的成员为了传递警报信息而使用的外激素。一般分子量小，碳原子数5-10，分子量 100-200，具挥发性，贮藏于接近体表的贮藏囊内，受到刺激则分泌挥发。作为蚁的警报信息素是从上颚腺及肛门腺分泌的柠檬醛（ citral）和香茅醛（ citronellal）等；蜜蜂则从上颚腺分泌庚酮（ 2-heptanone），从刺针腔腺分泌醋酸异戊酯（ isoamyl acetate）（称为 st-aingpheromone）。警报信息素可依浓度不同而表现不同
