定期，但是一种ESS一旦确立，就会稳定下来，偏离ESS的行为就会被自然选择所淘汰。ESS理论可以解释许多常见的生物现象，雄粪蝇（Scatophaga stercoraria）在牛粪上等待雌蝇并与之交配的最适时间，依赖于其它雄蝇的等待时间，如果某一雄蝇总是花固定时间等待，其它雄蝇就会取得竞争的胜利。因为固定等待时间若较短，等待时间较长的雄蝇会获得和晚到的雌蝇交配的机会；若固定等待时间较长，那么提早离开的雄蝇便可到另一堆新鲜的牛粪上与来临的雌蝇交配。因此，雄蝇在配偶的竞争中采取的ESS是随机地选择等待
