Keratin 18, together with its filament partner keratin 8, are perhaps the most commonly found members of the intermediate filament gene family. They are expressed in single layer epithelial tissues of the body. Mutations in this gene have been linked to cryptogenic cirrhosis. Two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq]. Function: When phosphorylated, plays a role in filament reorganization. Involved in the delivery of mutated CFTR to the plasma membrane. Involved in the uptake of thrombin-antithrombin complexes by hepatic cells (By similarity). Together with KRT8, is involved in interleukin-6 (IL-6)-mediated barrier protection. Post-translational modifications: Phosphorylation increases by IL-6. Proteolytically cleaved by caspases during epithelial cell apoptosis. Cleavage occurs at Asp-231 by either caspase-3, caspas-6 or caspase-7. 文献和实验膜上及其肿瘤中，分布范围与细胞角蛋白相似，但对内脏腺上皮的表达优于细胞角蛋白。因此对上皮源性肿瘤，尤其是低分化腺癌，最好与细胞角蛋白联合运用，可提高阳性率。 CK10细胞角蛋白10 阳性部位：胞浆 细胞角蛋白10(CK10)分子量为56.5 KDa，主要标记上皮的基底上皮和颗粒层细胞，同时CK10与细胞的分化程度呈正比，高分化者常阳性，主要用于鳞癌的诊断。 CK18 细胞角蛋白18 阳性部位：胞浆 细胞角蛋白（CK18
两者没有帮助。但是，使用不同表型角蛋白的抗体，可能对区分两者有一定价值。当然，通过使用针对其它非中间丝抗体在上述鉴别诊断中也会有所帮助。 3．有限特异性的角蛋白单克隆抗体本组抗体能通过对富含细胞骨架标本的凝胶电泳免疫反应，识别非共有的角蛋白表位，但并不一定说明这些单克隆抗体能通过组织学方法成功测定角蛋白的免疫表型。因而还不能肯定这些单克隆抗体对上皮组织肿瘤的进一步分类具有价值，这里不作一一介绍。但是，对已明确知道其免疫反应类型的某些抗体，则可予以使用。比如，对不能识别角蛋白18
