Ochratoxin A is a natural metabolic alkaloid produce by Aspergillus ochraceus1. Ochratoxin A is a potent a toxin which causes nephrosis in mammals. In the circulation, Ochratoxin A has a very long half-life in all species examined2. Although the kidney is the primary target organ for Ochratoxin A activity, studies indicate that Ochratoxin A is also a liver toxin, immunosuppressant, potent teratogen, and carcinogen3. Ochratoxin A increases activity of the endoplasmic reticulum ATP-dependent Ca2+ pump4.
