脊椎动物,哺乳纲,偶蹄目,牛科。为牛属( Bos)、水牛属( Bubalus)和牦牛属( Poephagus)等牛科动物的通称。躯体强大。不仅雄性有角,雌性多数也有角。前肢和后肢都有 4指(趾),第 3和第 4指(趾)特别发达,指(趾)端具有鞘状蹄。上颌无门齿,胃分 4室(瘤胃、网胃、瓣胃和皱胃),草食性,反刍。可分为乳用、肉用、役用和兼用等类型,经济价值极大。
偶蹄目牛科蓝牛属的唯一种。由于雄性具蓝灰色毛而得名。是原产印度的体型最大的羚羊类,体长 1.8~2.0米,高1.2~1.5米,体重约200千克,雌性较雄性个体要小1/5;四肢长,前肢又略长于后肢;蹄窄,前端尖;肩部隆起,体前部比后部高和粗壮;头部长,前额略突起,颈短;雄体背面蓝灰色,雌性较淡,腹面以及尾下面及蹄的四周均为白色;颈背具鬣毛,雄性喉部具1簇黑色长毛;仅雄性具角,角短而末端稍尖。生活于印度半岛中部的森林中。
