In Vitro: Ribitol is a reduced sugar. Phosphoglucose isomerase-deficient (pgi1) strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae are studied for the production of D-ribose and Ribitol from D-glucose via the intermediates of the pentose phosphate pathway. Overexpression of the gene encoding sugar phosphate phosphatase (DOG1) of S. cerevisiae is needed for the production of D-ribose and Ribitol. The engineered strains are compared for their ability to produce the PPP-derived 5-carbon compounds Ribitol and D-ribose from D-glucose.

胞苷二磷酸核糖醇cytidine diphosphate ribitol
通常简写成 CDP核糖醇。具有 D-核糖醇 -5-磷酸和 CMP以焦磷酸键连接成的结构，作为磷壁酸的多聚核糖醇磷酸键的生物合成前体，在革兰氏阳性细菌中可检测到。在由 CDP核糖醇焦磷酸化酶（ EC2． 7． 7． 40）作用下通过这样的反应过程，即 CTP＋ D核糖醇 - 5-磷酸 CDP核糖醇 PPi进行生物合成。以 CDP焦磷酸合成多聚核糖醇磷酸的酶活性，存在于细菌的颗粒部分，但其详细的反应结构尚欠明。
