Background Information

The interleukin 6 receptor is a complex composed of the IL-6Rα subunit and the signal-transducing glycoprotein gp130. Soluble IL-6Rα (approximately 50 kDa) is primarily generated through the proteolytic cleavage of membrane-bound IL-6Rα. After binding to IL-6 in solution, the formed IL-6/sIL-6Rα complex can further bind to membrane-bound gp130, thereby enhancing the biological activity of IL-6.
