孢霉是曾被进行详细遗传学研究的一种霉菌，特别是以该种霉菌进行基因微细结构、遗传重组、基因转换、细胞质遗传等的研究已有很大的进展。
由黑曲霉（ Aspergillus niger）培养液中分离出的可引起植物幼苗和根屈曲或畸形的生理活性物质，被命名为畸形素 A。后来从其它菌株中曾分离出畸形素 B。 A和 B后来各分离成 A1 、 A2 和 B1 、 B2 。已确定畸形素 A的结构是 L-异亮氨酰 -D-半胱氨酰 -L-缬氨酰 -D-胱氨酰 -D-亮氨酰的环状肽。
