CD5 is a surface glycoprotein primarily expressed on T cells and a subset of B cells (especially B-1 cells). It plays an important role as a co-receptor in modulating signals from the T-cell receptor (TCR) and B-cell receptor (BCR), helping to regulate immune cell activation, tolerance, and development. As a regulatory molecule, CD5 fine-tunes immune responses to prevent overactivation and contributes to maintaining self-tolerance, reducing the risk of autoimmunity. CD5 is also of interest in immunology and oncology research, particularly in the context of autoimmune diseases, leukemias, and lymphomas, where its expression patterns and signaling roles are being actively investigated.
