Troponin I or cardiac troponin I (cTnI) is a key protein found in the heart muscle that plays a critical role in regulating cardiac muscle contraction. It is a part of the troponin complex, which also includes troponin T and troponin C. cTnI specifically inhibits the interaction between actin and myosin, preventing muscle contraction in the absence of calcium. When calcium levels rise during an action potential, cTnI undergoes a conformational change that allows muscle contraction to occur. Because of its high sensitivity and specificity to heart muscle injury, cTnI is commonly used as a biomarker in the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) and other cardiac conditions. Elevated levels of cTnI in the bloodstream are indicative of myocardial damage.
