ULK2 (Unc-51 Like Autophagy Activating Kinase 2) is a serine/threonine kinase that plays a critical role in the initiation of autophagy, a cellular process responsible for degrading and recycling damaged organelles and proteins. ULK2 is part of the ULK family of proteins, which includes ULK1, and shares structural and functional similarities. Like ULK1, ULK2 forms a complex with proteins such as ATG13, FIP200, and ATG101, which together regulate the early steps of autophagosome formation. Although ULK1 has been more extensively studied, ULK2 is believed to have complementary and sometimes distinct roles, particularly in tissue-specific autophagy, neuronal development, and stress responses.
