Integrin alpha 3 (ITGA3) is a subunit of the α3β1 integrin, a transmembrane receptor involved in cell adhesion, migration, and communication with the extracellular matrix (ECM). It primarily binds to laminins and plays a crucial role in maintaining the structural integrity of epithelial tissues, especially in the skin, kidneys, lungs, and brain. The α3β1 integrin mediates signals between the ECM and the cell interior, regulating processes such as cytoskeletal organization, cell survival, and tissue development. It also cooperates with growth factor receptors to influence cellular behavior during development and repair. Dysregulation of integrin α3 has been linked to cancer progression, metastasis, and genetic disorders like ILNEB syndrome, which affects lung, kidney, and skin function. Due to its involvement in both normal physiology and disease, ITGA3 remains a significant focus in developmental biology and cancer research.
