IL-12 p40, also known as the 40-kDa subunit of Interleukin-12 (IL-12), is a crucial component of the IL-12 cytokine family, which plays an important role in the regulation of immune responses. IL-12 p40 forms a heterodimer with IL-12 p35 to produce the biologically active cytokine IL-12, which is involved in the activation of T cells and natural killer (NK) cells, promoting their differentiation into Th1 cells. These Th1 cells are essential for effective responses against intracellular pathogens. IL-12 p40 also exists as a homodimer (p40 homodimer), which can act as a negative regulator of IL-12 activity. The dysregulation of IL-12 p40 and IL-12 signaling is associated with various autoimmune diseases, chronic inflammation, and certain infections.
