Cyclin B1 is a regulatory protein that plays a crucial role in the control of the cell cycle, particularly in the transition from G2 phase to mitosis. It binds to and activates Cdk1 (Cyclin-dependent kinase 1), forming the Cyclin B1-Cdk1 complex, which is essential for initiating mitotic entry and regulating key processes such as chromosome condensation, nuclear envelope breakdown, and spindle formation. Cyclin B1 levels fluctuate throughout the cell cycle, peaking during the G2/M transition and decreasing after mitosis to allow progression to the next cell cycle. Its regulation is critical for cell division, and dysregulation of Cyclin B1 expression or activity is often associated with cancer and other proliferative disorders.
