    E-cadherin (epithelial cadherin), also known as CDH1, is a calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion protein that plays a fundamental role in maintaining epithelial tissue architecture and integrity. It is a key component of adherens junctions, mediating homophilic interactions between adjacent cells and linking to the actin cytoskeleton through catenins. Beyond its structural role, E-cadherin is involved in regulating cell polarity, signaling, and tissue morphogenesis. Loss or dysfunction of E-cadherin is frequently associated with epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), a process critical in embryonic development, wound healing, and cancer progression, particularly in metastasis.
