    KCNQ2 is a gene that encodes a voltage-gated potassium channel protein, which is part of the KCNQ family. It plays a critical role in regulating the electrical activity of neurons by controlling potassium ion flow across the cell membrane. This channel is essential for maintaining the resting membrane potential and regulating the action potential in neurons, helping to control neuroexcitability. KCNQ2 is primarily expressed in the central nervous system, particularly in the brain, and is involved in the generation of inhibitory signals that prevent excessive neuronal firing. Mutations in the KCNQ2 gene are associated with KCNQ2-related epileptic encephalopathy, a severe form of epilepsy that manifests in early infancy. These mutations disrupt the function of the potassium channel, leading to altered neuronal excitability and seizures.
