Sodium/potassium-transporting ATPase subunit alpha-1 (also known as Na+/K+ ATPase α1) is a crucial enzyme involved in maintaining cellular ion gradients across the plasma membrane. It is part of the sodium-potassium pump, which actively transports sodium ions (Na+) out of the cell and potassium ions (K+) into the cell, utilizing energy from ATP hydrolysis. This process is essential for maintaining cell volume, membrane potential, and electrochemical gradients, which are critical for numerous cellular functions, including nerve impulse transmission, muscle contraction, and cellular metabolism.
