在开展组织培养技术的初期，为了使所培养的组织能够增殖，认为有必要向培养基中添加胚的生理盐水提取物（胚压榨汁， embryo juice）。对胚提取物的有效成分虽曾进行过许多分离和测定，但并未成功。目前，由于对组织培养基已经有了改良，所以不添加这种成分较为复杂的胚提取物，也能使培养的组织得到充分的增殖，所以现在胚提取物已经很少使用了。
