由近亲交配或自体受粉产生的个体，在有关目标基因的组成上不存在杂合性。一般来说，是指一对或数对目标基因为纯合型的个体。纯系则是指所有有关的基因构成为纯合型的个体可以认为是纯种的一种特殊情况。纯种的对义词为杂种（ cross breed）
