There are many applications for gene transfer and gene expression technology in mammalian somatic cell biology. Whether for functional analysis of a newly cloned gene or for purifying large amounts of a protein for its subsequent biochemical characterization, it is often important to overexpress foreign genes in the “native” environment of a mammalian cell. Furthermore, rapidly developing gene therapy technology relies on the ability to express foreign sequences at significant levels in a stable, long-term fashion.
