雄性脊椎动物，一般是睾丸和中肾输管相连，通过中肾输管将精子排出，但在羊膜类由于后肾的形成，中肾输管另外形成输尿管，所以中肾输管便成为专门的输精管。但在无羊膜类，由于中肾成为成年动物的肾脏，在两栖类和软骨鱼类等中肾输管兼作尿和精子的排出，称为输尿精管或输精尿管。
