在脊椎动物中，消化管从发生上可以从前向后顺次分为前肠、中肠、后肠三部分，前肠是肝脏形成部前方部分（肝前部 prehepatic portion），可以分为口腔、咽、食管、胃、十二指肠起始部等，前肠这个词，有些学者将之作狭义的解释。最狭义的是指食管和胃两部分，与此不同也有人只把来源于外胚层的前方部分即口窝称为前肠。在昆虫中则把由咽经食管、嗉囊、前胃等到贲门瓣（ cardiac valve）的起源于外胚层部分称前肠。由于以上种种原因，所用外语也有些不同。
