与描述形态学相反，而是用实验手段来解析动物形态发生机制的科学称为实验形态学。自19世纪末，卢克斯（W.Roux）根据作为阐明发生现象的因果规律，而提出发生机制学以来，研究的对象已经不限于狭义的发生学现象，已扩大到与动物形态有关的各种领域中。
