水生脊椎动物的皮肤感受器的体侧侧线器是机械感受器，适于水流、水波、水压的变动即传播于水中的振动。相反，在水生动物中内耳迷路的听觉机能不发达，主要具平衡机能，但在发生学上证明它是起源于侧线的一部分，这些侧线器与迷路合称侧线迷路系。
