一般是指脊椎动物头部的正面，即从额到下颌两耳之间的部分。在解剖学上，除包围着脑的头骨之外，还加上上、下颌骨和鼻骨，颧骨等组成的面颅。在鱼类所见的鳃骨，可认为是它的起源。由于动物的种类不同，骨的形状有很大变化。面部有眼裂、外鼻、口裂、耳壳，成为视觉、嗅觉、呼吸、消化、听觉器官的开口部。另外有各种发达的颜面肌，从而能出现表情。在昆虫及其它无脊椎动物中，也有由眼、口等集合起来而组成的这种头部部分，一般也称之为面部。
